Coburg Tennis Club’s new lights serve up more court time

Oct 20, 2022

Coburg Tennis Club has celebrated the installation of new energy-efficient LED lighting on its junior Hot Shots court, allowing the local community, including children and families, greater access to courts.

The club was a recipient of a 2021 Jemena Community Grant for $10,000 which helped it to install the lights, together with a grant from Merri-bek City Council.

Coburg Tennis Club Treasurer Michael Leeder said having a junior court benefitted children coming through the club as they develop their skills to the point of being able to play on full-size courts.

“Installing the three LED lights on the court means children from the local community will have greater access to night-time play and coaching during winter for those who can’t make it to daytime sessions. It also enables us to expand our reach to all abilities players.”

Jemena’s Acting General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Michael Pintabona said the energy infrastructure company was delighted to help fund the project.

“As the electricity distributor for Melbourne’s north-west, it’s our responsibility to keep the lights on for the Coburg Tennis Club. We’re very pleased we were able to help fund the installation of three more, particularly when they will help the club to give kids more access to play sport.

“Melbourne residents and community organisations have had some challenging times over the past few years during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, so we have continued to expand our grants program to support more groups who are working hard to support their local communities.”

Jemena has recently announced the recipients of its 2022 Jemena Community Grants, with more than $170,000 in total going to 21 community organisations in Melbourne’s north-west and across NSW, where it is the gas distributor.

“We’re very proud this is not only our largest investment in community grants, but also the largest number of programs we’ve been able to fund through Jemena Community Grants,” Mr Pintabona said.

Since the program’s launch in 2019, Jemena has proudly awarded over $500,000 in local grants to 51 groups, supporting critical emergency relief, mental and physical health, education and other benefits for thousands of Australians.

Jemena also provides support to community members who may need additional help navigating the energy sector and taking control of their energy bills through its Uniting Energy Assist program. This program has helped participants save around $650 on their energy bills on average.
