Taking the right precautions near electricity infrastructure

May 8, 2023

Are you familiar with the No Go Zone rules concerning minimum distances that must be adhered to for people, equipment and machinery to work near overhead and underground electricity assets?

Each year, serious injuries and fatalities occur in Victoria as a result of equipment and machinery contacting powerlines, which is why adhering to No Go Zone rules is so important, said Jemena’s Network Investment & Delivery Manager David Speairs.

“We know that people can be complacent around powerlines because they are something they see every day. But at any given time, enough electricity to power homes and businesses across whole suburbs is running through them.

“This year, we’ve already seen 25 No Go Zone breaches across our electricity network in Melbourne’s north-west to date, compared with 33 in total in 2022. This trend is concerning, given making contact with powerlines could have life-threatening consequences,” he said.

David said there are a variety of resources available to help people plan ahead when working near overhead or underground powerlines.

“Safely working near Jemena’s overhead electricity infrastructure has never been easier, with our network information available on the Look Up and Live app. The app helps people easily access the information they need to safely work around overhead electricity infrastructure via their phone or web browser.

“In addition, if you’re planning any earthworks you should contact Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) at least one business day prior to starting your excavation or site project. BYDA provides a single point of contact to request information about any infrastructure networks at your planned project site, without you needing to contact various organisations individually.

“Knowledge is everything. We all have a role to play to ensure the safety of everyone in the community, while avoiding unplanned power outages due to damaged power infrastructure. Please plan ahead and follow No Go Zone rules,” David urged.
