Businesses and individuals carrying out digging works in the vicinity of gas assets across NSW are set to benefit from a game changing initiative that has successfully created a cartographic representation (visual map) of over 1 million gas service locations across Jemena’s Gas Network.
In an effort to reduce the number of accidental hits on gas assets, Jemena’s Mapping of Services initiative has greatly improved the visual representation of gas services on maps, which has helped boost efficiencies and empower informed and planned customer works around gas assets.
Prior to implementing these map improvements, customers were primarily only able to view and access information about Jemena’s gas mains via the Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) referral service. This left medium and low pressure services that were not always visible on BYDA plans vulnerable to strikes, with 80% of unintentional contact with Jemena’s gas assets occurring on such services.
Now, through enhanced visual representation of gas services on maps, BYDA users can make better informed decisions when planning and carrying out work around Jemena’s gas network. This improved accessibility will lead to safer excavations and reduce the number of accidental hits on gas assets, resulting in a safer and more reliable gas network for Jemena’s customers and the broader community.
Jemena receives over 480,000 BYDA enquiries a year, and this important piece of work furthers Jemena’s commitment to providing energy safely, sustainably and reliably while improving customer experience.
In future, Jemena plans to continue improving the accuracy and visual representation of its gas assets for customers by mapping additional services, and building more robust gas connection processes that correctly capture any changes to gas service pipes.
