Mapping the energy sector’s path to net-zero

Oct 30, 2023

Our Acting Managing Director David Gillespie has spoken at a CEDA event in Melbourne, talking to the path we need to take as an industry to reach net-zero.

Our view - the size and the scale of the challenge tells us that we must be looking for the most efficient pathways that utilise what we have today, rather than seeking to electrify or build everything we need, everywhere, all at once.

As David said, the values we deploy when developing the energy system of the future are critical. We need to enable optimal societal outcomes, maintain Australia’s energy advantage, and decarbonise the energy system without sacrificing system reliability or affordability through:

Being technology agnostic – we don’t have all the technology and solutions we need today, so we need to make sure that the pathway remains open to those existing and emerging technologies which can help solve this challenge.
An integrated energy system – where we re-think how we conceptualise the energy system and the evolving role of electricity, gas, and liquid fuels.
A customer-led approach which recognises the role of private and public partnerships.
