Nov 6, 2022

As at 12:30 PM, Sunday, 6 November 2022

Restoration Status

Area

Status

Oberon, Wallerawang, and Lithgow

Jemena is currently conducting make-safe activities, these are estimated for completion as follows:

  • Oberon by COB, Sunday 6 November 2022,
  • Lithgow and Wallerawang by COB, Monday 7 November 2022.

Customers in Oberon, with the exception of the Oberon Hospital, life support, and other vulnerable customers, have had their gas supply suspended. This is a necessary safety precaution ahead of ongoing gas supply being reinstated.

APA is actively working on a range of short and long-term solutions to restore gas supply as safely and as quickly as possible. We will provide updates where we can on these short-term solutions, including the timeframe on reconnection times.

Subject to weather conditions not deteriorating and suitable construction conditions, APA anticipates a permanent solution could see gas supply restored to consumers in Lithgow, Wallerawang, and Oberon in approximately 4 weeks (from Friday 4 November).

Bathurst

Make-safe activities continue for parts of Bathurst, although the majority of residential connections have been made-safe.

Our crew have reconnected customers to the gas network in White Rock and Raglan.

Crew will commence reconnecting customers in Kelso, Gorman’s Hill, Abercrombie, Eglinton, Llanarth and Windradyne today (Sunday, 6 November 2022), and will continue to work through reconnection in these areas over the coming days.

Gas supply to Lithgow and Wallerawang continues to be unavailable, with Jemena and APA crews – supported by local emergency services and council workers – conducting make-safe activities on the gas distribution networks in these areas. This is a necessary safety precaution, which also supports the restoration of our customers’ gas connections as quickly and safely as possible when gas supply becomes available. Additionally, customers in Oberon, with the exception of the Oberon Hospital, life support, and other vulnerable customers have had their gas supply suspended.

APA – the owner of the gas pipeline which supplies Oberon, Lithgow, and Wallerawang – is actively working on a range of short and long-term solutions to restore gas supply as safely and as quickly possible. Jemena will not be able to commence reconnection of household gas supply until this work has been completed.

We understand the urgency of this issue and are working closely with the impacted communities. We will continue to provide updates as works progress.

Crews have successfully completed make-safe activities for the majority of residential connections in Bathurst, and have restored gas supply for customers in White Rock and Raglan. Crew will today begin reconnecting customers in Kelso, Gorman’s Hill, Abercrombie, Eglinton, Llanarth and Windradyne.

Where crew are unable to access a property, a calling card will be left behind. We ask that our customers follow the instructions on the calling card to have their gas service restored.

Additional Crews

Jemena and APA have both mobilised additional crews from across Australia to support restoration efforts. We are also receiving support from the local SES and councils. We thank all people on the ground for their efforts and resilience at this difficult time.

To our customers, we thank you for your continued cooperation and patience.

Safety advice

Fire and Rescue NSW advises:

  • Outdoor cookers, BBQ’ and heaters, particularly those with charcoal beads, give off poisonous Carbon Monoxide gas and should never be used inside homes.
  • Petrol-powered pumps, outdoor heaters or generators should not be used indoors due to the deadly CO gases that are produced.
  • Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, tasteless and odourless gas that can build up in rooms and overwhelm people without warning, leading to death.
  • Don’t risk your safety or that of your loved ones, keep them safe by leaving outdoor heat sources outside.

Jemena advises:

  • Please do not touch the gas infrastructure at your property (including meters and valves).
  • Please switch off your gas appliances.
  • When the gas has been safely re-established to your area, Jemena will visit your property to perform a check and let you know it is safe. If you are not home, we will leave a calling card advising you of next steps.

If Bathurst residents have safety concerns, please reach out to us on 131 909 or in an emergency, phone 000.
