Guide to Gas Mains and Safety

Jemena owns and operates the gas distribution network, delivering safe and reliable gas to homes, businesses, and new developments. If you're planning a project that involves gas mains, whether it’s a new connection, relocation, or working near our infrastructure, it’s important to follow the right processes to ensure safety and compliance.

Before digging or building near gas mains, always check underground utilities through Before You Dig Australia. If Jemena infrastructure is on your property, specific guidelines may apply. Whatever your project, we're here to help you navigate gas mains safely and efficiently.

Services and Information

Before You Dig Australia

Before you start work, be aware of your surroundings.

Before starting any excavation, digging, or construction work, it’s essential to know what’s underground. Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) provides free access to plans showing the location of gas mains, electricity cables, water pipes, and other underground utilities.

Hitting a gas main can cause serious safety risks, costly damage, and service disruptions—so whether you're a homeowner installing a fence or a contractor working on a major project, lodging a BYDA enquiry is a legal requirement before breaking ground.

BYDA Process

  1. Submit an enquiry – Request plans through the Before You Dig Australia website.
  2. Review your plans – Identify any gas mains or other utilities near your worksite.
  3. Follow safe excavation guidelines – Use non-destructive digging methods when working close to gas infrastructure.
  4. Contact Jemena if needed – If your project involves digging near high-pressure gas mains, additional approvals or on-site supervision may be required.

Landerholder Information

Understanding your responsibilities when gas infrastructure is on your property.

If you own property with Jemena’s gas infrastructure, you play an important role in keeping the network safe. Gas pipelines may run underground or across private land, and certain activities require approval to ensure safety for both landholders and the broader community.

Key Considerations for Landholders:
Access to Infrastructure - Jemena may need to access our pipelines for maintenance, inspections, or emergency response.
Building and Development - Any structures, excavation, or tree planting near gas mains must comply with safety regulations.
Encroachment Guidelines - If you plan to build near a gas main, you may need approval to ensure it doesn’t interfere with pipeline integrity.
