Embedded Generation (EG) involves any form of onsite generation installed on your premise, which may require a connection to the Jemena Electricity Distribution Network.
Types of Embedded Generation include:
Inverter Energy Systems (IES):
Non-IES (rotating):
All generation systems that require an connection to the Distribution Network must be reviewed and approved by Jemena prior to connection and operation. This is to ensure safe and compliant operation of the Jemena network.
The Victorian Government is introducing an Emergency Backstop Mechanism (EBM) for inverter-based photovoltaic Embedded Generation systems. This Mechanism requires Jemena to switch off or curtail Photovoltaic Systems exporting to the Distribution Network when instructed to do so by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). Stage 1 of the EBM was implemented in October 2023 and requires all new, replacement and upgraded applications for Photovoltaic Systems with a generating capacity greater than 200kVA (~200kW- large systems) to be equipped with remote disconnection capability.
Stage 2 will come into effect on 1 October 2024 and extends the above requirement to all new, replacement and upgraded systems with a generating capacity between 0kVa to 200kVA (small to medium size systems). Learn more about the Emergency Backstop Mechanism here.
From 1 October 2024, all customers, installers and electrical contractors are required to:
DER Installation Fields | Alternating Current (AC) Connection Fields | Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Device Fields | Commissioning and connection fields (For inverter systems - new form within the portal) |
Aggregated Approved Capacity (kVA) | Number of AC Connections | Number of DER Devices | NMI (National Metering Identifier) |
Installer Identification | AC Equipment Type | Device Type | LFDI (Long Form Device Identifier- about 40 characters) |
Number of Phases Available | Inverter/Small Generating Unit Manufacturer | Device Sub Type | PIN (6-digit device pin) |
Number of Phases with DER installed | Inverter Model Number | Manufacturer | Photos of inverter settings |
Does the inverter have voltage response modes (Volt-Var & Volt-Watt)? | Inverter Series | Model Number |
Other Requirements:
|
Comments | Serial Number | ||
National Meter Identification Number |
Things you should know:
All new installations and upgrades to existing Installations must be compliant with the requirements of the Technical Rules, AS/NZS 4777.1, 4777.2, AS/NZS 3000, and other relevant Standards, Laws and Good Industry Practice. Applicants must be pre-approved by Jemena before installing any devices at the premise intended to be connected to the Jemena Distribution Network.
Jemena will apply a connection charge to cover the costs and time for our team to assess your application.
From time to time, we may be required to augment our network to facilitate your Embedded Generation system. Our team will contact you if we do need to make any augmentation and advise of any associated costs.
