Jemena's history

Our heritage combines the experience & assets of some of the country's most successful energy companies

Jemena was formed from the sale of Alinta Limited in 2007, when Singapore Power acquired the assets and asset management business now known as Jemena.

Our heritage includes the acquisition, development or asset management of a number of well established, successful companies such as Alinta, United Energy, Agility, ActewAGL, NPS, Multinet Gas, Duke, CLM Infrastructure, Outback Power and Cape Cable Layers, and we are backed by the vast strength and resources of Singapore Power International.

Since its formation, Jemena has achieved a number of milestones

2007

  • Several major transmission construction projects were initiated to increase gas supply capacity and meet projected demand forecasts
  • Construction on a mid-line compressor station on the Eastern Gas Pipeline boosted pipeline capacity by approximately 15%
  • Construction also began on an expansion to the Queensland Gas Pipeline to meet customers' increased gas needs

2008

  • The Jemena brand was launched. "Jemena" is an Aboriginal word meaning "to hear, to listen and to think"
  • The Sydney Primary Loop was officially commissioned by Jemena Gas Network in February 2008. Jemena constructed 30 kilometres of new gas pipelines through suburban Sydney ensuring the continued supply of gas to homes and businesses supplied by the network
  • AquaNet, part of the Jemena group, and Veolia Water Australia signed a contract with Sydney Water to build a A$100 million plant and pipeline scheme that will provide major industrial customers in western Sydney with recycled water

2009

  • Jemena commissioned the Colongra Gas Transmission & Storage Pipeline. Jemena's asset management business delivered a contract for the supply and storage of natural gas from its Sydney-Newcastle Gas Pipeline to Delta Electricity's Colongra gas fired power station in New South Wales. Jemena owns and operate the 9 kilometre gas pipeline and compressor station connecting the power plant. The high pressure pipeline and infrastructure will provide storage capacity to ensure Delta has enough gas to meet peak power demand
  • Jemena and United Energy announced a joint program to rollout advanced metering infrastructure which will see just over 1 million homes and businesses receive a new smart meter. The rollout began in September 2009 and is scheduled to conclude in 2013. This rollout is part of the Victorian Government initiative to fully integrate 'smart' meters into the electricity networks using two way communications. The costs of the meters will be included in the regulated asset base and recovered under the regulatory regime

2010

  • In June, the advanced metering infrastructure program achieved a milestone with the implementation of the new advanced metering infrastructure systems for the Jemena Electricity Network and United Energy networks. Jemena and United Energy were the first distributors in Victoria to deliver these systems to support the future operation of AMI and the first in world to be awarded ISO 27001 security certification for AMI
